Capt. Simmons received terrible news that the melanoma has spread and is no longer treatable.

Ventura City Fire Captain Barry Simmons retired in 2007 after 33 years of service to the Ventura community. His final assignment before retirement was Station 1.

Two years ago, he was diagnosed with melanoma… a cancer that firefighters have a 56% increased risk of developing. See below for more information on the link between firefighters and melanoma.

During a recent hospital stay for the melanoma, Capt. Simmons suffered several setbacks, including a fractured femur. To date, he has been in the hospital for 2+ weeks, with the expectation of going into rehab after. His wife and out-of-state children have been staying in hotels to be close to him.

Ventura Fire Foundation has provided the family with emergency financial support to assist with their expenses.

We’ve created a fund in Capt. Simmons’ honor. All donations to the fund will be used to replenish the Foundation’s resources, so that we may support other firefighter families in the future.

If you’d like to get a message to Capt. Simmons, leave a comment in the donation form and we’ll forward it to his family.

We appreciate your support.
